Dr. Jawdat Abu Taha, Head of the Electrical Engineering and Smart Systems Department at the Faculty of Engineering, Islamic University of Gaza, has successfully concluded an international credit mobility period at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU) in Austria. This program, which took place in June 2023, was part of the Erasmus+ program of the European Union, dedicated to fostering academic and research exchanges.
As part of the visit program, Dr. Abu Taha and his accompanying delegates, including Christoph Faber, the Deputy Head of the Department, and Professor Rafat Afif, had the opportunity to tour various departments and institutes at BOKU. These included the Materials Science and Process Engineering Department at the Institute of Wood Technology and Renewable Resources, the Institute of Physics and Materials Science, the Institute of Process and Energy Engineering, and the Institute of Molecular Modeling and Simulation.

During his visit, Dr. Abu Tahaa explored state-of-the-art laboratories and research facilities focusing on sustainability and the development of a sustainable future through the preservation and responsible utilization of natural resources. They gained comprehensive insights into the efficient conversion of renewable raw materials, the utilization of cutting-edge technologies, the design of innovative materials, and the technical advancements in processes, complemented by computer-based modeling and simulation. The delegation also had the opportunity to engage with graduate students working in specialized laboratories focused on thermal decomposition and energy generation.

The mechanisms for selecting research topics were a key topic of discussion during the visit. Emphasizing a bottom-up approach within strategically defined areas of competence outlined in the development plan, all researchers at the host university played a vital role in proposing research projects aimed at achieving research excellence. These projects address critical challenges such as biodiversity loss, climate change, and sustainable development while also focusing on the efficient utilization of resources.
Dr. Abu Taha further shared his expertise through two lectures based on his research in the field of renewable energy and its practical applications in Palestine. The presentations titled “PV Diesel Hybrid Energy Supply for Nasser Hospital in the Gaza Strip” and “Developing a Micro-Grid Modeling Approach for Nasser Medical Complex Energy Demand in the Gaza Strip” attracted the participation of academic staff members, graduate students, and visiting researchers from Montenegro. The discussions revolved around harnessing new energy sources to produce clean energy at a lower cost.
Expressing his deep satisfaction with the visit to the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (BOKU) in Austria, Dr. Abu Taha expressed his eagerness to establish collaborative relationships between the two universities. His vision includes comprehensive cooperation encompassing all areas of mutual interest, the exchange of experiences, and the strengthening of academic collaboration, scientific research, and training opportunities for the staff and students of the Islamic University.
