A Staff Member from the Faculty of Medicine Wins an International Prize in Medicine from the University of Oxford

Dr. Khamis Al-Assi, a member from the Faculty of Medicine at the Islamic University and the head of the Collaboration for Evidence Based Healthcare unit (CEBH), won an international prize in medicine for his role in spreading the culture of “Evidence-Based Medicine” (CEBH).

On its website, the University of Oxford said that Dr. Al-Assi was the first out of three academics who have won the award of achievement and creativity from the faculty of “Kellock” at the University. It added that the award came due to the efforts exerted by Dr. Al-Assi in spreading the culture of “Evidence-Based Medicine” in Gaza.

According to the University of Oxford website, the prize is awarded to contestants who demonstrate a commitment in involving their community, in addition to the academic excellence and the published researches in schools.

Indeed, Dr. Al-Assi has won this award for his tireless efforts to engage and familiarize the community with the concepts of “evidence-based healthcare”. Oxford University regarded this as an inspiring achievement, given the environment in which the work was carried out and the difficulties the Gaza Strip is going through.

Dr. Al-Essi noted that the culture of CEBH is found only in two countries, Britain and Canada, confirming that the Gaza Strip joined them to be the third country in this modern field. He, also said that the people who are responsible for this award were surprised from the ability to engage and spread the culture of (CEBH) in the besieged Gaza Strip.

In addition, he said that “we have done remarkable things in abnormal situations, and we have made achievements. Perhaps these achievements are not great at the international level, but in Gaza they are great due to the lack of the potential abilities”.

He added: “we were told by British experts at the University of Oxford, who have seen the magnitude of the achievements, that what we have done in Gaza cannot be implemented by great countries”.
