We are looking for an enthusiastic bioinformatician who would like to pursue her/his post-doctoral research in the field of pediatric solid tumors. You will work in a multidisciplinary environment in the group of the scientific director Heinrich Kovar on the biology of Ewing sarcoma. Our lab is based at the Children's Cancer Research Institute (CCRI) of the St. Anna Kinderkrebsforschung Association in Vienna (Austria). The Institute is located in the heart of beautiful Vienna, a European metropolis full of history, music and fine arts. Vienna has been voted “most livable” city in the world for the 4th year in a row. CCRI is a renowned research institution with tight links to the St. Anna Children's Hospital, a leading pediatric cancer center in Europe. The ultimate aim of CCRI research is to improve treatment outcome of malignant diseases in children and adolescents by performing basic, translational and clinical research. Our comprehensive cancer center entertains close collaborations with many other research and clinical institutions worldwide. Interested candidates will participate in a rigorous and thorough selection process, designed to identify the most promising young leaders from around the world. The process includes an online application and credentials evaluation as well as in-person regional interviews. Those selected will have demonstrated their potential to not only benefit from but also contribute to the Schwarzman Scholars program.

We offer research degrees at Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) level.

Our research is directed at making significant contributions to international society as a whole. It is grounded in addressing health, social, cultural and environmental concerns.

Submitting an application

You can submit an application at any time of year, however, we have three enrolment periods each year for new research programmes – early October, February and May.

It is also helpful if you can upload any other supplementary documents you may have, e.g. English language test results, references, funding letters etc.

We assess your research proposal when we receive your completed application form. If we believe that your proposal is viable and we have the capacity for your supervision, you and your potential director of studies will develop your proposal and complete a training needs analysis, working closely with your potential supervisors.

If you are accepted for a research degree you will be issued with an offer letter giving full details of your programme including the start date of your study. Offers of a place are made for the next available start date.

Entry requirements

Normal minimum entry requirements are a UK upper second class honours degree (2.1) or higher, or an approved overseas equivalent in a related subject.

If English is not your first language you should have, or expect to get, no grade lower than 6.5 in the IELTS English language test, or 58 in the Pearson Academic English test. If you don't meet this minimum entry requirement, you can take one of our pre-sessional courses, as long as your IELTS level is at least 4.0. Find out more

About the Program

The normal duration of a PhD thesis is 4 years, but funding can be secured for up to 5 years when necessary. A dedicated program including formal course work in the first year (3 hours per week, 30 weeks) is team taught and covers advanced topics in Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Developmental Biology, Molecular Biology, including 2 weeks on the ethical conduct of science. All course work is in English. During the first year the students begin research in the laboratory that they have chosen and produce a written thesis project to be defended orally in front of their thesis advisory committee (their thesis advisor, a co-advisor, and a third group leader from another department).

Prerequisites

• Applicants should have a Master’s degree in the Sciences or its equivalent
• An equivalent usually includes 9 semesters of University level training with a written research project
• Applicants should have a good knowledge of English

Admissions

The admissions committee will base its decision on the applications and interviews. Students living in Europe will be reimbursed for their trip to Geneva by train. Interviews of students outside of Europe will depend upon the circumstances. Invitations for interviews are sent within a few weeks after the deadlines and a final decision should be made approximately 4 months before the beginning of the program.
